Tech giants, including OpenAI, Alphabet, and Meta Platforms, have voluntarily committed to the White House’s call for safer AI technology by implementing measures such as watermarking AI-generated content. This move comes as part of the Biden administration’s efforts to regulate the rapidly growing AI industry, which has seen significant investment and consumer popularity.
In addition to OpenAI, Alphabet, and Meta Platforms, other major companies, including Anthropic, Inflection, Amazon.com, and Microsoft (an OpenAI partner), have joined the initiative. They pledged to conduct thorough testing of AI systems before release, share information on risk reduction and cybersecurity, and invest in safeguarding AI technologies.
Generative AI, such as ChatGPT, has gained widespread popularity, leading lawmakers worldwide to consider measures to address the potential risks to national security and the economy. US Senate Majority Chuck Schumer advocated for comprehensive legislation to enforce safeguards on AI in June.
The US Congress is also exploring a bill that would require political ads to disclose whether AI was used to create the content.
To further address the challenges posed by AI, President Joe Biden is working on developing an executive order and bipartisan legislation related to AI technology. As part of this effort, the seven major companies have committed to creating a system to watermark all AI-generated content, including text, images, audios, and videos, to inform users when AI technology has been utilized.
The watermark, embedded in the content through technical means, aims to help users identify deep-fake images or audios, prevent potential violence fabrications, scams, and biased or manipulated depictions of public figures.
The specific implementation and visibility of the watermark in shared information are yet to be clarified. The companies also pledged to prioritize user privacy as AI continues to develop, ensure fairness by eliminating biases, and avoid using AI technology to discriminate against vulnerable groups. Additionally, the companies committed to leveraging AI solutions to address scientific challenges, including medical research and climate change mitigation.
